WHAT ? A HYGROMETER?

Hygrometer

The hygrometer? an instrument that measures the humidity? relative air, or the relationship between the humidity? absolute, defined as the quantity? of water vapor present in the atmosphere at a given instant, and the humidity? of saturation, that is? the quantity? maximum water vapor that can? be present at a given temperature and pressure.

Both are expressed in terms of weight of water vapor per unit? of volume (kg/m3), while the humidity? relative, dimensionless, expressed as a percentage.

HAIR HYGROMETER

The most common genre common hygrometer ? the hair hygrometer, even if the commercial models use different systems.

A similar instrument, the hygrograph, measures the change in humidity in a given time interval. It essentially consists of a hygrometer associated with a recorder, be it mechanical (typically paper) or electronic.

Hair hygrometer:

The hair hygrometer is based on the variation of the length of a tuft of hair as the humidity varies. relative.

In fact, human hair has an elongation of about 2.5% between 0 and 100% humidity. relative. Isn't the variation? exactly proportional in a linear way with respect to the humidity? relative. The variation ? suitably amplified by a system of mechanical levers and then ? recorded mechanically, thanks to a writing tip and a clockwork device (hygrograph), or transformed into electrical impulses then processed with electronic instruments. Heart of the tool ? a long hair, carefully degreased for example with ether, mounted vertically in the instrument to prevent problems of accuracy and stability? of the measure, due to effects of suspension. The extremity? superior ? fixed, by means of tweezers, to a calibration screw which, by regulating its tension, allows the instrument to be calibrated. The lower part ? wound on the drum of the pointer of the instrument itself. In conditions of low humidity, the hair tends to get shorter

proportionally to the humidity values? relative environmental, making it possible cos? the measurement[1]. The hair hygrometer, due to its simplicity? and due to its relatively low cost, it is often used to build timepiece houses.

Isn't the tool? for? precise, and in the exclusively mechanical models pu? involve errors of 5-10% in part reducible with appropriate tables that account for the non-linearity? the variation in hair length. The error depends on the temperature at which it operates (below -30 °C the instrument does not work at all!) From time to time the instrument must be kept in saturated air,

what? it regenerates itself (if it is exposed outdoors, this regeneration normally takes place at night and poses no problems); furthermore it is subjected to calibration.

In the most types simple, calibration is often done by putting the instrument in a wet cloth for about half an hour and adjusting the index to 95%.

Electronic hygrometer:

The electronic hygrometer uses solid-state sensors which have the characteristic of varying their electrical parameters proportionally to the humidity value. related to which they are exposed. They can be resistive or capacitive. In both cases, the conditioning circuit uses a Wheatstone Bridge configuration[2] due to its great sensitivity, converting the resistive or capacitive variation into a measurable electrical signal. Electronic hygrometers are extremely precise and compact, even if they obviously need an energy source to work.

Wet bulb hygrometer:

The humid bulb hygrometer, or Assman hygrometer [3], exploits the drop in temperature caused by the natural evaporation of water. This temperature (also called dew point) is detected by a bulb thermometer placed in contact with a wet cloth, called wet bulb, and is compared with a similar thermometer which measures the real ambient temperature, called dry bulb. The two temperatures allow you to measure the humidity? relative environmental through a graph, said psychrometric diagram or Mollier diagram, which in addition to the humidity? relative pu? provide information also with respect to the enthalpy, the vapor pressure and the humidity? absolute.
