WHAT? A HYGROMETER?

Game meter

LA hygrometer is an instrument that measures the relative humidity of the air, or the ratio between absolute humidity, defined as the amount of water vapor present in the atmosphere at a given moment, and saturation humidity, which is the maximum amount of water vapor that can be present at a given temperature and pressure.

Both are expressed in terms of the weight of water vapor per unit volume (kg/m3), while relative humidity, which is dimensionless, is expressed as a percentage.

HAIR HYGROMETER

THEThe most common type of hygrometer is the hair hygrometer, although commercial models use different systems.

A similar instrument, the hygrograph, measures the change in humidity over a given period of time. It essentially consists of a hygrometer combined with a recorder, whether mechanical (typically paper) or electronic.

Hair hygrometer:

LA hair hygrometer measures the length of a strand of hair as the relative humidity changes.

Human hair, in fact, exhibits an elongation of approximately 2.5% between 0 and 100% relative humidity. The variation is not exactly linearly proportional to the relative humidity. The variation is appropriately amplified by a system of mechanical levers and then recorded mechanically, thanks to a writing tip and a clockwork mechanism (hygrograph), or transformed into electrical impulses which are then processed electronically. The heart of the instrument is a long hair, carefully degreased, for example with ether, mounted vertically in the instrument to prevent problems with the accuracy and stability of the measurement due to suspension effects. The upper end is fixed, with tweezers, to a calibration screw which, by adjusting its tension, allows the instrument to be calibrated. The lower part is wrapped around the instrument's hand drum. In low humidity conditions, the hair tends to shorten.

proportionally to the relative humidity values of the environment, thus making measurement possible[1]. The hair hygrometer, due to its simplicity and relatively low cost, is often used to build timekeeping houses.

The instrument is not precise, however, and in purely mechanical models it can cause errors of 5-10%, which can be partially reduced with appropriate tables that account for the non-linearity of the variation in hair length. The error depends on the operating temperature (below -30°C the instrument does not work at all!) From time to time the instrument should be kept in saturated air,

This is how it regenerates (if it is exposed to the open air, this regeneration normally occurs at night and does not cause problems); it is also calibrated.

In the simpler types, calibration is often done by placing the instrument in a wet cloth for about half an hour and adjusting the index to 95%.

Electronic hygrometer:

L'Electronic hygrometers use solid-state sensors that have the characteristic of varying their electrical parameters proportionally to the relative humidity value to which they are exposed. They can be of the resistive or capacitive type. In both cases, the conditioning circuit uses a Wheatstone Bridge configuration[2] for its great sensitivity, converting the resistive or capacitive variation into a measurable electrical signal. Electronic hygrometers are extremely precise and compact, even if they obviously require a power source to function.

Wet bulb hygrometer:

LThe wet bulb hygrometer, or Assman hygrometer[3], exploits the drop in temperature caused by the natural evaporation of water. This temperature (also called the dew point) is detected by a bulb thermometer placed in contact with a wet cloth, called the wet bulb, and is compared with a similar thermometer that measures the actual ambient temperature, called the dry bulb. The two temperatures allow the relative humidity of the environment to be measured using a graph, called a psychrometric chart or Mollier chart, which, in addition to relative humidity, can also provide information on enthalpy, vapour pressure and absolute humidity.
